The US muscle car, Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, is the most stolen car in America, according to a new report that found it is 60 times more likely to be stolen than any other vehicle on the road. US non-profit research organisation, HLDI (Highway Loss Data Institute), revealed that there were a staggering 6128 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat theft claims from 2020 through to the end of 2022. Ironically, Dodge took up the top two spots with the second most stolen car being the Dodge Challenger HEMI, having theft claims that were more than 20 times higher than average. In a media statement, HLDI senior vice president Matt Moore speculated on which cars are the most popular targets among thieves.
“There’s some commonalities here that we see on a regular basis. And that is, vehicles that are powerful vehicles that are pricey, expensive vehicles, and or pickup trucks. A lot of the vehicles on this list are some combination of those three things,” Moore stated.
Dodge cars are definitely both powerful and expensive. Starting at $85,250, the 2023 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat model is not a cheap, entry-level car. Equipped with a powerful V-8 engine that has up to 807 horsepower on some models, the car has been described as “more at home at a drag strip than on a road course” by the car and driver website. The US muscle car also has an image of cool which could make it appealing to thieves.   Featured heavily in the Fast and the Furious movie franchise, Dodge cars have long been glorified as not only fast, powerful cars but also cool, sexy cars to boot. So what were the least most stolen cars, you might ask? Electric vehicles. Six of the 20 least stolen cars in the US between 2020 and 2022 were all electric, with the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y reporting three claims per 100 cars. Maybe it’s time to invest in a Tesla, if not just for environmental factors. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance.
