U.S. Restaurant charges extra for ‘adults unable to parent’

We’ve all seen questionably behaved kids at restaurants before, but this U.S. eatery has taken things a step further than most.
We’ve all seen questionably behaved kids at restaurants before, but this U.S. eatery has taken things a step further than most. Georgia Restaurant, Toccoa Riverside Restaurant is charging some of its customers for their inability to control their children while they dine there. It all started when a Reddit post about the restaurant went viral two weeks ago, with the headline “This restaurant charges you extra for bad parenting.” The post, from someone called ‘LPineapplePizzaLover’ under the subreddit, r/mildlyinteresting, included a photo of the restaurant’s menu showing a number of additional charges that Toccoa Riverside diners could face.
Tucked away at the bottom of its painfully formatted menu, the Toccoa Riverside Restaurant tells its diners of its “adult surcharge” – adding three dollar signs next to the words: “For adults unable to parent”.
The menu adds: “No respect, no service.” Located in Georgia’s picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains, the restaurant is a popular destination for outdoor lovers who can fish, raft, or paddle down the Toccoa River. The restaurant’s owner, Tim Richter, claims that the parenting surcharge was implemented “a few years ago” during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. “We want parents to be parents,” he told a local media outlet, rather cryptically. While Mr Richter told local news that he hasn’t even threatened guests with the fee until recently, several poor Google Reviews disagree. One reviewer, Danielle Hampy, wrote: “If you have children, absolutely avoid this place at all costs. Claiming that her children were ‘running through the restaurant,’ Ms Hampy was slapped with a $50 surcharge for “bad children”. “They were down by the river…we were told we need to “go to Burger King and Walmart” and that we were bad parents,” Ms Hampy rebuts. Despite the recent negative publicity, the restaurant continues to receive mostly glowing reviews, being praised for its ‘great service’, ‘awesome food’ and ‘amazing scenery’.   Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance.
