If you’re worried about a dramatic return of volatility into the market and avoiding potentially significant capital losses, then tune into Reach Markets’ next installment of “Meet the Funds Manager”. We will be joined by Jerome Lander, the portfolio manager of the Lucerne Alternative Investment Fund, who during the savage 27.65% plunge by the ASX200 in February and March this year returned -5.96% for the same period, beating the market by an impressive 21.69% over two forgettable (for nearly everyone else) months. Under Jerome’s management and adopting a best-of-breed multi-asset strategy to reduce volatility, while capturing uncorrelated returns, the fund has now outperformed the market since he took over management in 2H 2019, beating the exceptionally volatile market  by 23.95%. The headline grabbing outperformance is a direct result of the remarkably reduced volatility of the fund.   Book here Meet the Funds Manager – Event Details: Date: 18 September Time: 12pm AEST Format: Fireside chat with interactive Q&A   While no one could have predicted a global pandemic, the COVID-19 related market crash was exactly the market environment Jerome had envisioned when constructing a portfolio that was uncorrelated to the market and employed a best-of-breed, multi-asset strategy. So why are we calling him the “Volatility Doctor”? Firstly, he is a qualified medical doctor, who shortly after completing his medical training, discovered and fell in love with the world of investing. He re-trained and never looked back. Secondly, some of Jerome’s medical background seems to have carried over into his approach into money management. With a hippocratilian “first do no harm” style, Dr Lander brings a refreshing whole of patient (sorry, investor) approach to managing money.  While we were getting to know him a little before the interview this Friday he said: “It’s very easy, if you’re in my position, just to go and make money for yourself, but it’s not very satisfying. You’re just going to get richer and richer, and so what? You know that you can do that already. But can you make other people wealthier? That’s actually the challenge, that’s actually a more meaningful challenge, and it’s a more meaningful thing to go after, and I think that’s a great motivator for me, and I’m so happy when I deliver a great result for clients, and I’m extremely unhappy if I don’t. I think it’s great if people make money when their clients are making money. That’s terrific. It’s not good if you’re making lots of money at the expense of your clients, I think that’s terrible.”
“I think there’s such a gaping hole between the types of strategies that people actually produce for clients, and what clients actually need for their portfolios. And that leaves an opportunity for people like us who actually want to deliver what clients need and want, as opposed to what we think they should be doing, or what is best for our business.”
We can’t wait for what promises to be an extremely interesting interview and look forward to sharing Jerome’s experience and unique approach with you in detail. This is a free event.
